Before leaving for church this morning Heather presented me with a beautiful card and my very own chocolate cake!

After church Heather's friend Hunter joined us for the afternoon so I roped him into playing photographer for me.

Mother's Day

Can it be possible I've been a mother for almost 17 years??? It sure doesn't seem like it....even though one of my Sunday School students informed me today that I'm ALMOST old enough to be a grandmother!!!! Kids! You gotta love 'em! or do you??? :0)

In church this morning Heather sang a solo, "You Raise Me Up," and I thought she did a wonderful job, especially considering she didn't think she could sing this song!

I coaxed Marty and Heather into a picture while we were all dressed up.

I took this photo of my mom the last time she came to visit me in Texas. She and my sister-in-law Lis drove all the way here from Missouri, stopping frequently to take photographs along the way, and spent just over a week here with me and my family. We'd planned a "photography vacation" and this was taken when we visited the park in a nearby town and decided to ride the train through the park. I love that Mom, no matter what stressful things are happening in her life, can always find something to smile and be thankful about. She's the opposite of her own mother who so struggled to find joy in her life. Thank you Mom for always helping me to remember to look on the bright side!

Mother's Day is on the horizon. That holiday always reminds me of the Mother's Day when I was in 5th grade and Mom was pregnant with my little brother Levi. That year my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Hoskins, required each student to write an essay for the local radio station's Mother's Day Contest, "Why My Mom's the Greatest." I wrote my essay, along with the rest of the students in my class. My teacher so loved my essay she read it to the entire class. Then, I believe it was on the Friday before Mother's Day, the radio station read all the winning essays throughout the day on the air. My letter was read over and over and I couldn't believe how many people came up to me to tell me they heard my essay on the radio. My bus driver at the time, Brenda, made me feel awesome when she told me it was the best essay of all she'd heard. Mom still has that essay and my certificate. I can't remember what it was, but Mom also won a prize for being the greatest Mom. Mom still claims that was one of her fondest Mother's Days.

When possible I'll post the words of that essay here. Mom works nights so is unable to retrieve the essay to read to me tonight. When my step dad Jerry gets home and answers the phone we'll see if I can convince him to pull the essay from behind the certificate frame and read it to me!
