Matadors vs. Buffalos

Our Mighty Matadors lost their Homecoming game against Clemens Buffalos last night. Our boys managed 2 touchdowns, one very early in the game but just couldn't seem to inch past those Buffalos again. It seems especially disappointing to lose our Homecoming game but we'll be right back out there watching them in Boerne next week.

Because it was Homecoming, the dancers and band did not perform at half time, but performed after the game. It was great to see so many people stay after the game was over to watch and support them!

It was a little chilly last night...the first game I've needed a jacket! I for one enjoy football seasons when it stays warm enough for no jackets at all!

I've been experimenting with more manual settings on my camera. I found some recommendations for my camera specifically for shooting night football games so I tried them out. Back to the drawing board....the photos have an overall bluish tint and I still didn't capture the action shots quite like I wanted.
Here are Michelle and Heather in the "Victory Line" before the game.

At halftime the Starsteppers and the Matador Band took the field to help present the Homecoming Court.

Because it was chilly, Cathy took the dancers into the gym for their warmup time.

Cathy prays with the Starsteppers before every performance. That impresses me so much! Thank you, Cathy for taking such good care of our girls!

Mums and Garters and Ribbons...Oh My!

It's Homecoming week at Heather's high school. With that comes the trip to the Homecoming Store for all the stuff to make the garters and/or mums, the upcoming parade and pep rally, the Homecoming Football game on Friday night and the dance on Saturday.

Heather likes to have her hand in picking out what goes on the garters, etc., but this year found her too busy to make the trip to the store with me. So today on my lunch hour I headed into town to pick out the stuff I was sure she'd like....only to find the Homecoming Store had closed! I drove over to a florist that I thought I'd heard carried the goodies too and was in luck. I found ribbons, flowers, stars (Starsteppers have to have lots of stars you know!), a french horn, ribbons that say "This Band Rocks!", music notes, dance boots, bells, a football, etc.

When Heather was through with band and dance practice for the night I picked her up but rather than get home so we could make her garter, I persuaded her to join me at the walking track to go walking. I started yesterday and walked 2 miles. It felt great! She was in a great mood tonight and didn't grumble a bit about having to walk after rigorous dance and band practices back to back. We walked our 2 miles, ran some errands and came home.

Before moving to Texas I'd never even heard of Homecoming Mums and Garters. When Heather was in Middle School a lady at church told us all about the tradition when Heather announced her friend Ryan was getting her a mum. Barbara took Heather under her wing and helped her make Ryan a garter. After that each year, now that we know what's expected, we buy the supplies and make them ourselves.

Here we are getting stuff glued and ribbons attached.

Heather worked intently on her garter.

Voila! The finished garter:

Heather's Essay

Heather had to write an essay for her English class last week. She's been working on this essay for a while and she'd read me parts of it as she'd go along. Because of the subject matter she chose, she had a lot of difficulty getting through it. When she completed it Thursday, she read it to us as soon as she got in the car after school. I was very impressed. She never ceases to amaze me with her abilities to do so well at so many things! Grab a kleenex and read her essay:

"A Memory LOST, but Never FORGOTTEN"

"King me!" he said as I carefully twisted the Oreo apart, placing the bitter, sweet half on my yearning tongue, the chocolate melting in my mouth as I eagerly waited for the whole thing to melt before taking another sip of cold, sweet milk. It may have been just another Saturday morning, but not in the eyes of my grandfather. "Each day is a blessing given to us by God, and the day we die will be the happiest moment of our lives." He would tell me this time and time again. I never fully knew what he meant until it was too late to ask.
At the crack of dawn, you could wake up to the sweet aroma of coffee brewing. The gentleness of small children sleeping could be felt all around the house. The birds singing songs of love and peace to those up early enough to savor every moment of the new world to another calm summer morning.
Playing Oreo checkers was a normal occurance between my grandfather and me. A tradition that began long before I can remember, and ending with the day of his death. "It wasn't supposed to end this way," I told myself. "You were to keep up the tradition, but you failed." I was so hard on myself with his death. I blamed myself for not noticing all the signs of the tumor staring me in the face.
A not so silent good morning erupted from a deep, scratchy, I just woke up, don't talk to me until I've had my coffee, voice. It was a voice many young children learned to fear and respect. It was a voice that carried with the wind in every direction. This was the voice of my loving grandmother.
"Don't eat too many Oreos, I'll be starting breakfast soon and I expect you to clean your plate."
"Yes ma'am," both my grandfather and I said simultaneously.
This, of all mornings, floods my memory as I walked through the threshold of the wide hospital door. I carried all the trophies I'd earned at the dance competition that same morning.
The man lying in the bed was not the man I had known and loved my entire life. No, the lifeless heap entangled in a mess of sheets with eleven staples in his head doesn't even remember my name, let alone that I am his oldest granddaughter.
I try not to stare at his cold, pale skin, his untidy handlebar mustache, or his half shaved head. The air is cold, as if death has already taken its final breath.
Thinking back to the day I first stepped on Texas soil, I can remember rolling on the floor in laughter with the continuous "race to the ribs" game my papa and I played together. I try to feel the same way toward the man in the room with us, but all I can accomplish is holding back the tears as they start to flow from my eyes, streaking my face with the caked on mascara and eyeliner I wore at the dance competition.
My papa's nurse walks through the door with purpose, completely forgetting why she came in. She stares in awe at the trophies overcrowding the windowsill mixed in with the flowers and balloons we brought in.
Everyone decides it is best to leave while the nurse does her hourly post surgery check-up. I start to follow everyone, but am stopped by the nurse's conversation with my grandfather. "Who is the pretty young lady with all the trophies?"
"I'm not going to tell you her name, you have to guess," he said to her jokingly. He said this because he couldn't remember who I was. I ran out of the room crying hysterically.
To this day I still don't know if he ever remembered me after the surgery. Part of me wants to believe he did, but the other part of me says he didn't. Sometimes I lay awake at night thinking about it. I often wonder if the surgery did anything at all, or if it was just a big waste of hope.
We all knew he was going to die sooner or later, so why have the surgery? Maybe it gave us just enough time to say goodbye, maybe it was God's way of letting us let go. We will never know, but eventually, in time, God will show us His true reason for why He did the things He did, in the order He did them.
I don't think I will ever be able to eat an Oreo without thinking about my ever-loving grandfather. Then again, this was the man who did a lot of things crazy so we would never let go and never forget. I believe he lived his life to the best of his ability, and never missed an opportunity to say "I love you," even if it was just by waking me up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning to create the best memory I will never forget.

"Mario" Gets Her First Warning!

Most of you who know me well know I drive too fast sometimes. Marty has called me "Mario" for years because of my lead foot. Fortunately though I'd never been pulled over for speeding....until today. I was in a big hurry because I could not get Heather out of the house on time to get her to her band contest so I was driving way over the speed limit as I neared town. Thankfully the officer only gave me a warning (my first) and sent me on my way. Whew! I continued on my way at a much slower pace and got Heather to her destination (late, despite my speed).

When Marty arrived home from work he complained that my bad luck was rubbing off on him! He brought in a warning he'd recieved today as well. It seems the same officer who'd pulled me over early this morning pulled Marty over later this afternoon not a 1/2 mile from where I was stopped. He too only recieved a warning....but he was pulled over for only doing 2 miles an hour over the speed limit! I admit I was driving slightly faster than that. When we headed back to town to the fair...Marty took another route to avoid that stretch of highway!

I took some random photos at the fair which can be found on my other blog. Heather had asked if we could attend the Fair Queen Contest tonight at the fair. Her friend Cleary was one of the candidates. Unfortunately the contest took place just as we had to leave the fair and pick Heather up from her band trip. Before we left, I received permission to go back stage prior to the contest to take Cleary's picture. She looked stunning!

Kicked by Mules

The Matadors were beat once again at last night's football game. They played the Mules of Alamo Heights in San Antonio. Better luck next week Mats!

The dancers were a riot tonight as they warmed up on the track next to the football field prior to the half time show. They always cut up and make me laugh, but tonight they were nuttier than normal. The managers of the team usually help make sure the 3 dancers who are also in band have their instruments where they need them. As Heather's horn was laid down on the track tonight, her friend Ryan, the school mascot, swiped it and pretended to play it. He messed around with it a long time before she even noticed he had it. (What an observant child I have, eh? I have no clue where she gets that!!!)

"Pepe" with Heather's mellophone.

Oops! Pepe's busted!

Good thing these instruments are made of some sturdy stuff!

Pepe gets kissed by Ashley and Heather.

Thank you Cleary, for snapping this photo of Heather and me!

Cleary always makes me laugh.

Usually Heather plays in the band, THEN dances at halftime. Tonight things were switched around a bit and she danced the kick routine then played in the band. I was so impressed with her performance during the kick routine. She has worked very hard this week on her kicks and it showed tonight. Her kicks were higher than I've seen them and I couldn't tell at all that she'd recently sprained her ankle. I believe she is over her injury!

The kick routine. Heather is third from the left.

All the girls in this photo look like they are having a great time!

I can't usually capture the girls this together. Great job, girls!

And on to the band....

For this shot alone, I LOVE my new lens!

Go Mats Go! Next week: Homecoming!

First Fish

As I was searching photo boxes Tuesday for pictures of my niece Averie to post with a Happy Birthday shout out to her, I ran across lots of other photos that had me reminiscing most of the evening. Even Marty has been in and out a few times picking up this batch of photos to look over them and remembering this day.

Memorial Day was always a big deal for my family. We'd always make a day of visiting the nearby graveyards and placing new flowers on the headstones of close family members. I can remember when Grandma and Grandpa even went with us and it was an adventure when we were little to find the names of family members they were looking for. Of course I'm sure they always knew right where the graves were, but we sure thought we were being a big help as we'd read name after name until we found the right ones.

Later trips always ended at the river. We'd save the graves located near the river for last and when through we'd all head to the water to skip rocks, fish, etc. In Missouri Memorial Day was still usually too cold for swimming in the ice cold spring-fed rivers. I don't remember which river it was, but we always called this particular swimming hole "Martin's Crossing" or "Martin's Ford" and many of the names on the graves at that cemetery are Martin.

One particular Memorial Day when Heather was about 3, several of us loaded up to make the trek to the cemeteries and then to the river. The men fished, the kids fished, and the women sat around enjoying the warm afternoon. This day always brings a chuckle when Marty and I remember it. It was the day Heather caught her first fish, with Daddy's help. She had a brand new Snoopy fishing pole, complete with a Mickey Mouse bobber.

She waited ever so patiently while Daddy prepared her pole, attached the bobber and cast it out into the water.

Then the screaming began! "No! Daddy! No!!! You're DROWNING MICKEY! BRING HIM BACK! BRING HIM BACK!" She was so upset Daddy quickly reeled Mickey back in and rescued him from the fishing line and replaced him with a round red bobber. Mickey never went fishing again and I've kept him all these years as a reminder of that day.

Happy Birthday, Averie!

I have plenty of family that I have not blogged about yet. Marty and I both come from large families so we have many many relatives. He has many I've never met and vice-versa. It's especially difficult to get to know each others' families well when the majority of his family lives in Wyoming, the majority of my family lives in Missouri, and we live in South Texas. Unfortunately we don't often make the trip to Wyoming to see his family. Thankfully we are able to keep in touch anyway, often via email. Many family members, although they don't often comment, do read here.

Marty is one of 4 boys. I've blogged most often about his twin brother Mike and his family. They live near here so we see them fairly often. His other two brothers, Andy and Rick, live in Wyoming. Andy and his beautiful wife Courtney have 2 children, Gavin and Averie. Courtney graciously emails photos of the kids pretty often so we can keep up to date with them. Our niece Averie turned 7 years old today! It just doesn't seem possible. The last time we saw her was in 2003 when we were in Wyoming for my father in law's memorial service. Time goes by way too fast and kids grow up so quickly!

These are photos I took the last time we were in Torrington to see Marty's family. Here is our niece Averie with her Uncle Marty.

Heather with her cousins Gavin and Averie.

Uncle Marty with Gavin and Averie.

And this is the most recent photo Courtney sent just a few weeks ago taken after the kids' soccer games. I cannot believe how much they've grown!!!

Averie, I hope you had a wonderful 7th birthday! We love you very much!!!

(It's also Riley's birthday today. Riley is the daughter of my friend Erica. Happy Birthday, Riley!)

And I almost forgot! It's Ryan's birthday too! Happy Birthday Ryan! (for those of you who don't know, Ryan, the school mascot, is a buddy of Heather's and they've been friends since 7th grade).

Coming up...more trips down memory lane! I've been digging in picture boxes trying to find these photos of Gavin and Averie and while I was digging, came across more blog material!!! Stay tuned....

Ok, so I had some awesome sunset photos I took tonight. THE MEMORY CARD IS STILL IN THE COMPUTER!!!!! I have no pictures. :0( It must be Monday!!!!

On a happier note...today is my niece Danielle's birthday! Happy Birthday Danie-the-Pooh! We love you!!!

The Mighty Matador Marching Band

Yesterday turned into a busy day! The fair parade was yesterday but I didn't attend, so to see how that went you'll have to check out Erica's and Lisa's blogs. The high school marching band had a contest in nearby Schertz yesterday afternoon so I opted to go watch them there. Heather requested that I watch the marching band contest. I never see her march in her band uniform because I only see the band's performances at the football games or at their practices. During football games Heather marches in her dance uniform. She's been telling me for a long time I need to watch the band from high up in the stands so I can see all the formations. I usually watch them up close, like on the sidelines where I can take closer photos of the dancers.

I invited my mother in law, Billie, to attend the contest with me. Earlier in the day my sister in law Debbie called to invite us to meet her in San Antonio to help shop for a dress for my niece Cheyenne's first Homecoming dance. Since we already had plans to attend the band contest, we arranged to meet before then to help shop. After finding THE perfect dress for Cheyenne Billie and I raced over to Schertz to watch the band.

We arrived in time to watch two bands perform before the Matadors. The Mats did an awesome job!!! Later in the night Heather called to tell me they placed 3rd in their category and qualified for State. Go Mats Go!!!

The Mighty Matador Marching Band in action!

Heather and her Granny. Thanks Granny for going with me today!

We decided to leave after watching our band perform because I had a date with Marty! We found Heather after their performance to snap a couple of photos and tell her hello and goodbye and raced back home. I arrived back home with just enough time to change clothes, pick up Marty and head back out the door to go back to San Antonio to see the movie "Fireproof." If this movie is playing anywhere near you, I recommend you take your spouse and go see it. It can change your marriage. If you've seen "Facing the Giants," this movie is produced by the same church that produced that movie. Check out the trailer for the movie here.

Friday Night Lights: Mats vs. Antlers

I was too tired to post after last night's game so for those of you waiting, here it finally is. Unfortunately the Matadors lost last night's football game against the Kerrville Tivy Antlers. Nonetheless we will continue to eagerly support our Matadors!!!

This is the first home game I've been able to attend so I was very excited to be able to go. Plus, Heather was able to dance again after recently spraining her ankle. On another note, I was approached by 2 moms inquiring about my photography. I guess I need to remember to take my business cards with me even to football games. One dance mom had seen one of my photos published in a local daily paper and was eager to find out how she could purchase any photos I may capture of her daughter this year. I keep thinking I should get a smugmug photo website for photos such as this, but just haven't done so yet. Hopefully soon!

And Gerald, I didn't know until last night you're a reader here so hello to you and keep scrolling down, there's a photo of your daughter coming up!

It was definitely good to be back in the stands of Matador Stadium! Marty and I both got a big chuckle when the band played Ozzy's "Crazy Train" and several men seated behind us sang right along. It was great! Soon after, the opponents' band played "My Girl" and one of those men said, "Oh yeah? Well we got "Crazy Train!" Never a dull moment!

See? I'm back in my place next to Marty in the stands! Woo hoo!

Marty's mom and her husband Freddie are also season ticket holders to the home games and join us for those games. Freddie is out of town this weekend golfing with his buddies so Billie came without him. Here's Marty with his mama:

Our seats this year are close to the dancers and band so I don't have to go as far when I run down to take pictures of them. This one was taken from my seat of the dancers cheering in the stands.

One of my favorite starsteppers Cleary with everyone's favorite mini-starstepper Micayla (the dance teacher's daughter). Cleary's a senior and we will greatly miss her next year!

The Starsteppers performed a pom routine for the halftime show.

I captured a few shots of the game from my seat but I'm still playing with camera setting hoping for better shots.

Because it was middle school night for the band, they did not march during half time. The high school band played a couple of songs with the middle school students and the dancers danced. Later today the band will head off for their first contest so after the game last night they performed their entire routine for everyone who stayed to watch.
Heather among the other mello players.

Good luck today at contest to the Might Matador Marching Band!!!

Check back later for photos of that. I plan to head over to see that today as well!

It's All Much Easier to Laugh About....

Because to Cry Would Just be too Depressing! :0)

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... Murphy just needs to find another home! First the bike broke down. (Well, I guess that wasn't the first thing...first I got sick, but that's a whole 'nother story). Then the car broke down shortly after that. So now we are down to just the Suburban to transport us everywhere we have to go. It's a juggling act sometimes but we've made it work. Then my recovery from surgery took much longer than I had anticipated or hoped. And the latest? My Bunn coffee pot died. Horror of horrors, I know. My mother in law was gracious enough to lend us another coffee pot, however it is not a Bunn. So, I can't get my coffee almost instantly, but I don't have to wait as long as I'd feared. The saddest part? The broken Bunn? It sits on a counter in the kitchen still. Neither of us can toss it just yet. We seem to hold out hope that it can be repaired I guess. Each time I walk through the kitchen I think "I should just pitch that thing," but I still haven't. I think I owe that to my mom. Her Bunn died in much the same way as ours did and she managed to fix hers herself. Using a funnel she bought at the store, she somehow attached it to the part that broke and she's still using her broken Bunn. I did not inherit my mother's ability to fix things. I depend almost entiredly upon Marty to fix broken things around here. My Mom did try to teach me her ways, but I just never got it. My sister Regina did. She's more like Mom in that aspect. I'd just much rather leave it to Marty to fix. I tell him that's his department. I like it that way just fine. I'm sure if I had to manage on my own I could, I'm just thankful I don't have to and I can just leave it to Marty. He can take it. He's got big shoulders.

As for Murphy? Him I can't take anymore! Out with you, Murphy! I've got things to do!

Birthdays

I guess most people start feeling older the more birthdays they've had. You know what makes me feel older than that? Seeing my younger siblings get older and knowing my daughter will graduate high school in less than 2 years.

Today my baby brother turned 26 years old. What???!!! 26??? When did that happen? He was born when I was just 14 years old and I remember so clearly what he looked like as a baby. I even remember what the moon looked like the night he was born. Knowing he's now 26....now THAT makes me feel old...older than my own birthdays make me feel.

Today would also have been Dad's birthday. Sadly Dad's been gone over 9 years now. That doesn't seem possible either. He sure loved sharing his birthday with Levi. So, October 1st, a day once celebrated in our family, has become a little bittersweet, with Dad gone and Levi still struggling to get his life on the right track.
